Bloggers take note, Facebook adds Authorship feature

Facebook has released a new "authorship" feature that's driven by the Author meta tag. If this sounds similar to Google's Authorship which was canned last year, that's because it is.

With a simple meta tag, writers and publishers can now indicate the author profile or publishing page for any given piece of content. The result is a linked name attached to any shares of that content on Facebook that allows viewers to see the author and potentially follow them.

The Social Network is more proactively seeking to keep audiences with them, rather than have them click-off to other sites. In an effort to maximize attention and get that ‘win’, Facebook needs to make Instant Articles an irresistible proposition – no one’s going to give up their own website, a place they can monetize and control if they’re not getting anything significant in return. And while Facebook is the number one driver of referral traffic on the web, it still needs to ensure that those who do publish on Facebook see that they will get results better than they could get by sticking with their current publishing process.

What you need to do as an author is make sure your Facebook and SEO settings on your blog allow this functionality.

On Facebook: Go to Settings,click on the Followers ab, then Set Who Can Follow Me to Everybody.

This field needs to be populated with the full URL for your Facebook profile. Mine looks like this:

 <meta property="article:author" content="" />

On your blog, make sure you’re using an SEO plugin, and enter your Facebook url into the appropriate fields. I downloaded the DeConf plugin.

Gaining followers is a great way to promote your blog if you don’t want to maintain a separate brand page, and if you don’t mind managing your privacy settings on your personal Facebook page, and/or on individual posts.
